With the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, the U.S. Rule 40 Permissions System is temporarily closed to new submissions.
Looking ahead to 2021
Barring changes in IOC and IPC guidance, the USOPC intends to maintain its Rule 40 guidance for Tokyo 2020, and Personal Sponsor Commitments (PSCs) already completed in this system will be extended to the new 2021 Rule 40 period.
In 2021, the USOPC will check in with companies who have completed PSCs to (1) determine if they still intend to run any campaigns with Tokyo 2020 participants during the Rule 40 period in 2021, and (2) if the details entered in each PSC still accurately reflect campaign plans for 2021.
What’s allowed for the rest of 2020
Companies can continue to use athletes in their marketing campaigns through the remainder of 2020 without USOPC approval so long as each campaign is compliant with
USOPC Athlete Commercial Guidelines
and each athletes have approved the usage of their name and/or likeness
